Colonizing Consciousness: How the Prison System Sustains the Occupation of Palestine [EN]

We will examine the prison system as a core tool for shaping and controlling Palestinian consciousness, sustaining the colonization of Palestine and erasing the Palestinian national identity.

Drawing on the experiences of Palestinian political prisoners, we will trace the methods of physical violence and psychological torture used to break resistance and mold compliance. We will explore how prisons mirror, and help reproduce, the broader conditions of life under occupation, from surveillance and restriction of movement to the suppression of cultural and political expression. This discussion will also look at the political consequences of mass imprisonment, and how the carceral system functions, not only as a site of confinement, but as a laboratory for the ongoing project of colonial control.

Joining virtually will be representatives from NGO’s that advocate for the rights of detainees and political prisoners in Israeli prisons.
